Data Types
In the last post, we went through a couple of examples of econometric questions. In this post, we will walk through three major data types used for econometric analyses.
I. Cross-Sectional Data
Cross-Sectional data is data which describes the activities of "entities" (individuals, firms, or other units) at a given point in time.
Example 1. Data Format (Numbers are arbitrary)
Example 2. Top Gainers, Yahoo Finance (2020/06/16)
Example 3. NBA Season Leaders (2020/06/16)
II. Time Series Data
Time Series Data is data which describe the movement of a variable over time. They can be daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual or even picosecond level.
Example 4. Data Format (numbers are arbitrary)
Example 5. Global Mean Temperature, NASA (03/23/2020)
III. Panel (Longitudinal) Data
Panel or Longitudinal Data is a combination of the above two data types.
Example 6. Data Format (numbers are arbitrary)
Example 7. COVID19 Cases over time, Schroders (03/23/2020)
Example 8. Korean Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) 200, Lorenz Curve
